I have been a regular visitor to Russian archives and am secretary to the International Contact Group for historical political economy research in former Soviet archives. My book Accounting for War (1996) rebuilt the Soviet wartime real national accounts. Subsequently I led (with John Barber, Cambridge) an international collaborative project of archival research the results of which are published in The Soviet Defence-Industry Complex from Stalin to Khrushchev, co-edited with John Barber (2000). For studies of agency problems and hidden inflation in Soviet industry see my articles in the Journal of Economic History (1998) and the Journal of Comparative Economics (2000).
