		Biographical Sketch:
After an English education starring R.H. Whittaker, Peter Neumann, Michael Atiyah, Jim Mirrlees and Joe Stiglitz, I moved to MIT in 1979. I had a bad years-long case of writer's block, and left the academic world for GTE Labs, but came to California in the late 1980s. I have been a professor at Berkeley ever since, but with two stints in the government: in 1996-7 I was Chief Economist at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and in 2000-2001 I was Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Antitrust Division, US Dept of Justice. |
