He has done M.A. (First Rank and Gold Medallist) at Mysore University and Ph.D. in Economics with Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR) fellowship at Institute for Social & Economic Change, Bangalore. He won Commonwealth Fellowship in 1999-2000 and Japan Foundation Fellowship for 2004/2005. He obtained Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Fellowship for 2009/10 and worked as a Fulbright Scholar at University of California, Davis, USA during September 2009-April2010. His area of specialization is Industrial Economics, with special reference to Start-ups, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Economics of Technological Innovations and Industrial Policy Issues.
